Hunting Survey

Below is a survey asking people for their opinion on different questions regarding hunting. The survey was completed by a random assortment of people via Facebook and was also done by part of our own class.

Here is some testimony from the people who took our survey:

  • I believe hunting to be a great way to help control surplus animal populations. It seems more humane than starving to death in the wild due to a lack of adequate food. I believe trophy hunting is disgusting and I disagree with the practice.
  • People should be part of the process to get a better understanding and therefore an appreciation of where their food comes from. If you like veggies you should grow them and if you like meat well either raise it up yourself or hunt for it!
  • I personally do not hunt, but I have no problem with it whatsoever. Animals are on this earth to be eaten. While I wouldn't enjoy the blood and killing, the people who do have every right.
  • I am very grateful for a source of free range, antibiotic free, humanely killed venison each year.
  • When done in an ethical manner hunting is a terrific sport. A true sportsman is responsible and ensures that the shot he is taking is going to result in a quick kill meaning less suffering for the animal.
  • I think hunting is ok in some cases, but never where the animal is going to be wasted. I also detest the culture surrounding hunting; people post photos of their kills on Facebook and it's disturbing. Additionally, some hunters also seem to think that the hunting that is currently done is somehow traditional, when in reality the tools and weapons have changed so much that it doesn't require as much skill and can't really be considered "sport." The respect hunters seem to have for animals is very low in my opinion.
  • I would just like to comment that "Trophy Hunting" is a common practice that I have no issue with, but I find wasting the meat detestable. I would love to use the bones like the Native Americans did, but sadly, there's not much call for that nowadays, haha!
  • I think that raising animals and slaughtering them humanely is better than eating meat from factory farms, however I think that when an animal is killed by a hunter it is a much more painful death than they would have had at a factory farm, but they would have had a better life. All in all, a complex issue.
  • All my life I have grown up with my dad and his friends hunting and therefore being able to eat fresh game meat all year round. I find that eating dear, boar, and bear that someone went out and got themselves is much healthier for you than going out and buying beef from the store that could be filled with so many additives and hormones. There are hunting laws put in place so that way we don't kill off an entire species such as when you can and cannot hunt and in NH there is a lottery to be able to get a moose hunting permit.
  • I think hunting is the most ethical form of harvesting meat, especially compared to any form of agricultural meat production. Being hunted is a natural state for game animals. These animals have keen senses and strong instinct to avoid dangerous situations and predators. Nature can be cruel and sad, not every animal can die of old age. When an animal is harvested by hunting, the hunter makes a personal sacrifice when harvesting, compared to the disconnected process of buying meat. The hunter has a connection to the land and the natural way of things. The hunter honors the animals life by using it to keep himself alive. I am not opposed to hunting for a trophy as long as the rest of the animal is not wasted.
  • I don't personally hunt but I think that hunting for food, in a manner that takes into account the effects of hunting on populations, is a perfectly normal and just practice. The shooting of the biggest and strongest animals to hang on walls or just to throw away (e.g. wolves and coyotes) is completely unnecessary.
